preCharge News POLITICS — President Donald Trump said Saturday that he will raise his global tariff to 15%, up from the 10% imposed a day earlier, following a Supreme Court of the United States ruling that struck down a set of sweeping global tariffs.
Trump announced the increase in a social media post, saying the decision followed what he described as a “thorough, detailed, and complete review” of the court’s ruling.
Supreme Court Ruling Triggers Escalation
Trump Cites ‘Anti-American’ Decision
“Please let this statement serve to represent that I, as President of the United States of America, will be, effective immediately, raising the 10% Worldwide Tariff … to the fully allowed, and legally tested, 15% level,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post.
The president’s remarks came after the court ruled that a key statute he relied on — the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) — does not authorize the president to impose tariffs.
New Tariffs Issued Under Section 122
Temporary Authority Allows Duties Up to 15%
Infuriated by the ruling, Trump signed a proclamation Friday invoking Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974, which allows the president to impose tariffs of up to 15% for 150 days to address “large and serious” balance-of-payments problems.
The tariffs issued Friday are scheduled to take effect Feb. 24, though it remains unclear when Trump will formally sign an updated order raising the rate to 15%.
Legal experts caution the Section 122 tariffs could still face court challenges, particularly if extended beyond the 150-day window without congressional approval.
Other Tariffs Remain in Place
Steel, Aluminum, and Autos Unaffected
The Supreme Court’s decision did not affect tariffs imposed under other legal authorities, including Trump’s duties on steel, aluminum, and automobile imports, which remain in force.
Trump said his administration is also pursuing additional tariffs under other sections of federal law that require investigations by the Commerce Department.
Trump Attacks Supreme Court Justices
Personal Criticism Escalates
Following the ruling, Trump launched an unusually personal attack on the justices who ruled against him, including Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett, both of whom he appointed during his first term.
“I think it’s an embarrassment to their families,” Trump said at a news conference.
He continued his criticism Friday night, also targeting John Roberts.
Praise for Dissenting Justices
‘New Hero’ Emerges
On Saturday morning, Trump praised Brett Kavanaugh, calling him his “new hero” for authoring a 63-page dissent. He also applauded Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito.
“There is no doubt in anyone’s mind that they want to, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” Trump wrote.
What Comes Next
Legal and Market Uncertainty Ahead
While Trump insists the 15% global tariff is “legally permissible,” the escalation sets the stage for renewed legal challenges, heightened trade tensions, and uncertainty for global markets as the administration searches for alternative statutory paths to enforce its trade agenda.
