A Closer Look at the Patriots’ Final Pick and Its Implications

The New England Patriots wrapped up their 2025 NFL Draft by selecting cornerback Kobee Minor from the University of Memphis with the 257th overall pick, earning him the title of this year’s “Mr. Irrelevant.”

Minor, who transferred from Indiana to Memphis, had a modest college career. Standing at 5-foot-11 and weighing 180 pounds, he recorded a 4.56-second 40-yard dash and two sacks in his final season. Despite limited starting experience and no interceptions over five seasons, the Patriots saw potential in his special teams contributions.

Analysts have given the pick low grades, citing concerns about Minor’s athleticism and impact potential. However, the Patriots’ decision reflects a strategic move to add depth and competition in their secondary unit.

Minor joins a draft class that includes first-round pick offensive tackle Will Campbell, second-round running back TreVeyon Henderson, and other notable selections aimed at bolstering the team’s roster across various positions.

As the Patriots prepare for the upcoming season, Minor’s role will likely focus on special teams, with opportunities to develop further within the team’s defensive schemes.

Kobee Minor highlights, strengths, weaknesses at Memphis

Minor was a highly touted recruit out of Lake Dallas High School. He’s a physical player and was consistently in the other team’s backfield during his season with the Tigers.

The 5-foot-11, 182-pound Minor will still have to work on his coverage skills, but he’ll have a good shot to make the Patriots’ roster because of his ball skills and tackling ability.

Kobee Minor stats with Memphis

Minor made 37 tackles for the Tigers in 2024 and also had two sacks and two forced fumbles. He had a highlight-reel sack-fumble against Middle Tennessee in September that helped start a Memphis run.

He made 29 tackles during his season with Indiana in 2023.
