preCharge News MICHIGAN — Authorities responded to a fire on Friday night at a senior living facility in Southgate, Michigan.
The fire was reported at American House Southgate on Allen Road. In an update at about 12:40 a.m. Saturday, Southgate Fire Chief Justin Graves said there were no injuries or fatalities reported as crews continue to put out the fire. Graves says they are counting for all residents and don’t know of anyone reported missing.
Authorities say the fire got into the attic, but the cause remains unknown. Graves says crews across Downriver responded to the fire.
An investigation is ongoing.
Graves pointed to a fire that happened two years ago at another senior complex in Southgate. In October 2023, crews responded to the Meadows of Southgate, which is also on Allen Road, where dozens of residents were displaced.
“It’s wild. It’s almost an identical building, too,” Graves said.
Karen Schoemaker, whose mother lived at the facility and was able to get out, said she is saddened for all of the residents.
“I visit her about every day, and I know a lot of these people, so walking around, I see them out here, and I don’t know where they’re going to relocate or if I’ll ever see them again. You build relationships, you know, so it’s kind of sad.”
