preCharge News POLITICS — As Russian President Vladimir Putin travels to China, Moscow’s leader is focused not only on strengthening ties with Beijing but also on securing concrete wins in trade, energy and geopolitical cooperation.
Putin’s two-day visit to Beijing comes shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump’s own state trip to China, which the White House said resulted in diplomatic and trade progress.
The Russian president is now seeking to reaffirm and deepen an already close relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping as global power competition intensifies.
Analysts Say Timing of Visit Sends a Strategic Signal
Analysts say the timing of Putin’s arrival is unlikely to be accidental.
Ed Price, senior non-resident fellow at New York University, told preCharge News that the visit serves as a reminder that Russia views itself as China’s closest geopolitical partner despite recent U.S.-China engagement.
Putin and Xi have developed increasingly close ties over the past decade, and Moscow is expected to seek stronger diplomatic support regarding the ongoing Ukraine conflict.
“As long as President Putin has territorial ambitions in his West, which is Ukraine, he must have diplomatic success in his East, which is China,” Price said.
Energy Agreements Could Become a Central Focus of Talks
Russia’s energy relationship with China has become increasingly important since Western sanctions reshaped Moscow’s export markets following the war in Ukraine.
Russia lost large parts of its European energy market and has increasingly relied on China and India as key buyers of oil and natural gas exports.
Power of Siberia 2 Pipeline Remains a Key Objective
One of Moscow’s primary goals during the visit is believed to be securing movement on the proposed Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline project.
The planned pipeline would transport additional Russian natural gas to China through Mongolia and could significantly expand export capacity.
Sergei Guriev, dean of London Business School, told preCharge News that the project remains a top Russian priority.
“The main deal that Putin wants to discuss with Xi is, of course, the gas pipeline,” Guriev said.
Analysts note, however, that China appears under less pressure to move quickly because Beijing has diversified energy sources and increased reserves.
Expanding Trade Ties Remains Critical for Russia
Putin has described Russian-Chinese cooperation as having virtually unlimited potential, but experts say Moscow’s growing economic dependence on China has become increasingly evident.
Following the Ukraine war and sanctions from Western nations, Russia redirected trade flows away from Europe and toward Asia.
China Has Become Russia’s Largest Trading Partner
Russia now relies heavily on China for technology products, manufacturing goods and consumer products.
Analysts say trade volumes between the two countries have surged in recent years, reflecting a broader realignment of Russia’s economic relationships.
“For Russia, this visit is very important,” Guriev said.
“Russia depends on China on technology, consumer goods, and manufacturing goods.”
Ukraine and Security Issues Could Shape Discussions
While trade and energy are expected to dominate the agenda, geopolitical considerations remain central to the relationship.
Questions surrounding China’s position on the Ukraine war continue to attract international attention, particularly after reports that Xi may have privately expressed concerns about Russia’s invasion strategy.
Chinese officials have rejected those reports as inaccurate.
Moscow Seeking Stability on Its Eastern Front
Analysts suggest Russia is also looking for reassurance about long-term security coordination with China.
Sitao Xu, chief economist at Deloitte China, noted that Moscow and Beijing both have strategic reasons to maintain a stable relationship given their extensive shared border and evolving global security challenges.
