Homes in the surrounding area were evacuated, and the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) urged the public to avoid the vicinity as officers secured the scene.

Local Officials Condemn ‘Distressing’ Incident

Sorcha Eastwood, who represents Lagan Valley, said the explosion was “distressing and disturbing,” noting the potential risk to residents and businesses.

“A busy area, a car bomb left outside residential housing, small businesses and any number of people out and about on a Saturday night working or socialising,” she said. “It is only through the grace of God that there are no casualties.”

Investigation Underway as Motive Remains Unknown

Authorities have not yet identified who was responsible for the explosion or what motivated the attack.

Police continue to examine the scene and gather evidence, while maintaining heightened security measures in the area.

Recent Attempted Bomb Attack Raises Concerns

The incident follows a similar attempted attack last month in Lurgan, about 20 miles from Dunmurry.

In that case, police said a “crude but viable” improvised explosive device was used. Two masked men forced a delivery driver at gunpoint to transport the bomb to a police station, prompting evacuations of around 100 homes before a controlled explosion was carried out.

Dissident Groups Remain a Persistent Threat

Police previously indicated that the Lurgan incident was likely linked to dissident republican groups seeking to provoke fear and remain relevant.
