preCharge News POLITICS — President Donald Trump said Sunday that the U.S. will attempt to “free” stranded ships trapped by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz since the war with Iran began.
The effort, dubbed “Project Freedom,” is set to begin Monday and will focus on helping civilian vessels from non-combatant nations safely exit the contested waterway.
Humanitarian Mission Focus
“I have told my representatives to inform them that we will use best efforts to get their ships and crews safely out of the Strait,” Trump said, describing the operation as a humanitarian effort.
Critical Global Trade Route Remains Choked
The Strait of Hormuz has been largely impassable since the conflict escalated, stranding vessels and disrupting global supply chains.
Oil Markets Under Pressure
Roughly 20% of the world’s crude oil passes through the strait, contributing to surging oil and gasoline prices as the waterway remains blocked.
Iran has enforced the blockade through attacks on vessels and the deployment of naval mines.
Military Role and Operational Details Remain Limited
Trump did not initially provide details on how the operation would be carried out or the extent of U.S. military involvement.
CENTCOM Outlines Broader Mission
Later, U.S. Central Command indicated that the mission would include guided-missile destroyers, more than 100 aircraft, unmanned systems, and approximately 15,000 service members.
The operation aims not only to free stranded ships but also to restore freedom of navigation in the region.

Risks of Escalation With Iran Persist
It remains unclear whether Iran will allow the operation to proceed without interference.
Warning of Potential Military Response
Trump suggested cooperation from Iran could support ongoing peace talks but warned that any disruption of the mission would be met with force.
Fragile Ceasefire and Ongoing Negotiations
The U.S. and Iran have maintained a fragile ceasefire for over two weeks, though negotiations to end the war have yet to produce a breakthrough.
Diplomatic Uncertainty Continues
Trump recently expressed dissatisfaction with Iran’s latest proposal, even as discussions continue behind the scenes.
